The reason is article 5 also states: “This article is complemented by Article 6, which stipulates: „For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack: on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer.” In conclusion that means should any of the NATO force be attacked or killed on the territory of Ukraine the Article 5 COULD NOT BE TRIGGERED! Since Ukraine wasn’t place on that NATO forces were “on the date when the Treaty entered into force. For the sake of competition below both articles in full reading: Article 5“The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area. Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. In brief: I don’t think RFK Jr. is trustworthy. He makes too many extraordinary claims without providing extraordinary evidence.

There’s a fantastic book on this topic (albeit from a different angle) called The Evolution of Cooperation by Robert Axelrod. It was published in 1984 but it seems to have been gaining more notice recently. I’ve heard someone say it’s the most important book in the last hundred years and I can’t say that I disagree. It analyzes the ingredients that are necessary for cooperative strategies to emerge and flourish, and is very useful for anyone interested in effecting change in an organization. I highly recommend it!

The command’s wardroom is unique in that it is 99% mustang and as an URL officer, iot for us to suceed, they must push themselves out of their comfort zones and dig deeper to cover down on billets we don’t have here. I think that their lives are out of balance, which is the root of this. Many people play many games without realizing it and don’t give other aspects of their lives the attention they need.

I actually found this podcast episode after talking to my family about my alcohol problem, because i been quitting off and on for the past 5 years. It would only stick for a couple of months and then something would trigger and i would hop back on. All the half measures that y’all named in the episode I went through, like quitting in a couple of days or just having one drink. It also helps that you started with Henry Rollins and I look up to him as a great role model. I wasted a lot of money and time on drinking as a numbing agent and I am going to do better.

It’s so important for people who are not alcoholics to voice these truths about the effects of this substance. You don’t have to be a problem drinker do you have alcohol affect you adversely. Gents this podcast and book was like listening to the short list of problems in the Military. numerous orgs I’ve been apart of have set up committees and meetings to be better but caused so much pain. Friend was hired as a civ in the depot where we are and he was told by his supervisor to explicitly slow down, work slower, don’t tell people how to work faster. reasons given were it would make others look bad or let people know work doesn’t have to take that long. I just listened to this episode , I found it inspiring and went to search for his book, Of course I discovered he lost his battle with depression on march 28th of this year, with all he knew and all he learned what a dark hole he must have fell into, Its heart breaking , that’s all I got , It’s heart breaking.

Sadly I had to turn it off after 20 minutes. I sometimes listen with my kids and wife, and when someone elects to swear in the volumn that was forthcoming, a podcast listed as “clean” hardly lives up to the advertising. There are times when I’d like to tell Jocko…”well done” or “wish I had this knowledge as a young Artillery lieutenant”, someone comparing this podcast to the over 250 I’ve listened to with guests who’ve experience things beyond comprehension…yet they presented themselves professionally and comported themselves appropriately, speaking to an audience decidedly mixed. I just couldn’t listen to this, nor did I hear of all the controversy that followed. I listened to the original #288, and filed away pertinent “lessons learned” but “Part 2″ never made it out the starting blocks. Maybe it’s generational, but I’m not subjecting this to people I respect. A few days ago, I saw that moron and her insane and hyperactive dog collide head-on with another canine companion. She was being dragged along the street as the dog pulled frantically at the other end of his leash. The dogs got into a fight, and then she made the defense that because you can’t control the environment or forecast what will happen, thus I didn’t do anything wrong since the dogs got into a fight. After then, there was some back and forth argument between the two of them. In all honesty, I believe such training should be required by law. Particularly for any new owners who may read this.

I am a big fan of video games, and my favorite one is geometry dash.

Always wondered how Jocko on DMT sound like … well we all know now. 🙂 Hope he locks his guns before … else tough luck for the poor sods on SWAT team that would be trying to arrest him. 😀

How do I learn the rules of a game with either finite or infinite rules if I wish to participate? How do you learn the rules and regulations of this game as established by the local health department, the state department of taxation, the Internal Revenue Service, and other government agencies? Go to any rural area (especially back in the 30’s) and you’re going to find guys mining coal, hauling nets, felling trees, etc. for 9+ hours a day while being alcoholic chain smokers. It isn’t that far fetched to believe a young athlete could pull a similar schedule on the mats and in the gym, at least for a while.

I enjoyed this episode but a lot of the details about Kimura’s life discussed on the podcast seem to be impossibly fanciful.

For example, if we are to believe Kimura’s description of his routine at face value, appar He was training nine hours a day, every day and sleeping for only two hours a night. He was also apparently known as a heavy drinker and smoker. Additionally he’s doing crazy intense weightlifting sessions on the daily. It just doesn’t stack up mate.

I just finished “The Boys In The Boat” by Daniel James Brown about Washington U. and their gold medals at the 1936 Olympics. Awesome Podcast. I am a little conflicted about it. I had friends and fellow veterans that were in contact with the Marine units that were in Afghanistan during our “withdrawal.” There were very strong opinions on the military allowing civilians to conduct operations (NCO level). It is interesting to see the seemingly opposing viewpoints. Marines were pissed that they were told they couldn’t conduct operations. Yet, civilians could get positive press, photo opportunities, and the ability to act.
Deals that are made at the top for operations to be conducted do not always make it to the bottom, to the guy/gal standing at the gate looking at a sea of people. I hope that all my brothers and sisters (civilian former operators and active duty) can see in hind site the different perspectives that they could not at the time. As I was listening to this I was curious about the idea of quitting, quitting does not feel good and can be looked upon as weakness, the game I was involved in was competing in Division 1 Track and Field, my senior year I had to step away to focus on earning my degree and search for jobs after college, I am still torn about this decision because I did not complete my goals on the track and I feel like a quitter for it. I was honest with myself knowing there was no long term gain from competing. The game I was more focused about was earning college degree, finding a good job, buying a house, and raising a family. I feel like some parts of this podcast make it seem like it is okay to quit something if it does not meet the goals of the bigger picture. Is it okay to quit, how can you cope with quitting something you were once very passionate about but had to put it aside for a bigger game?

The state owns at least 50% of your plant BY LAW! You don’t own jack. And as 50% owner, it has 100% access to the know-how. Companies give away everything for a few cents of profit. Do you think China made this huge leaps in R&D in a few yeaars by it’s own? It stole the while thing (copying the homework, and taking credit for it).

If I want to play in a new game, how do I learn the rules of a game that has either finite or infinite rules? You mentioned opening your gym, how do you learn the rules and regulations of that game as set by the local health department, or the state department of taxation, the IRS, or some other government agencies? I can play chess, or basketball, with some lose knowledge or the rules and there are few consequences to losing those games. If I start a gym I could easily lose the game to the IRS and that seems like an overwhelming hurdle to getting into the game. If I start a shooting range, I might lose to the ATF. If I start a mechanic shop, I might lose to the EPA. If I start the real estate game, how do I figure out the landlord/tenant rules, the banking regulations, the tax regulations to even get started? How do I overcome my fear of endless rules or gain the knowledge to get started in a new game where there are evolving rules, regulations, and laws and where the big reward comes with big risks, ie bankruptcy, financial ruin, fines, prison?

Listening to the section regarding high ranking officers retiring from the military hit home. I am a career law enforcement officer and I have seen many of my peers leave the organization unprepared for what lies after retirement. I believe that this is caused by a lack of balance in their lives. Many people don’t realize that they are playing multiple games and don’t put the proper amount of effort into other parts of their lives. Many times their families are where they are not putting enough effort into that game. It is imperative that we (regardless of occupation) understand that our organizations don’t care about us. Individuals inside these organizations certainly do, but the organization is forging ahead and the moment that one goes out the door, they are no longer relevant to the organization, thus not important. Our families need more of our attention and we need to play that game better!

I listen to your podcast as I train for a marathon…game of fitness. As you state, I am in multiple “games”….wife, mom, career, faith, fitness and friends/connection…and that you can be winning in a few of them, but that it’s incredibly difficult to be winning at them all. Laser focus on one and you’ll start to falter in another area. It’s all a balancing act and we’re constantly trying to adjust.

Great podcast, I used to be an ejection seat mechanic in the marine corps and would like to add something if it helps. Towards the end when you talked about the amount of elections a pilot can sustain before being grounded I was always told 2 elections before requiring a waiver to fly by the pilots I supported on the AV8B Harrier platform. My first CO had ejected from my Ssgt’s seat and would often come by the shop to thank us for what we do before flights. Listening to this podcast gave me a bit of pride in my former job in the corps.

So happy Chris could make it on your show. One of my favorite books on business is Never Split the Difference. Packed with priceless treasures. In less than a month after finishing the book, I’d more than recouped the book’s purchase by successfully haggling down the price of some new furnishings. I disagree with DVOs position on masks. Masks are to protect others and not only yourself. By not wearing a mask (at that time), he was putting others at risk. So, while the LEGAL justification for mask mandates may not have been there, I think there is also a MORAL obligation not to needlessly endanger others.

I would have enjoyed this podcast so much more if the women didn’t constantly use ‘uptalk’ . Uptalk or Upspeak is often considered to be unprofessional because it undermines the speaker’s level of competence in the eyes of the listener. Upspeak, also known as uptalk or high rising terminal (HRT), is a linguistic occurrence in which a speaker uses a rising inflection at the end of a declarative sentence. This rising intonation at the end of the sentence makes a statement sound like a question. It is Speech in which each clause, sentence, etc., ends like a question with a rising inflection starting in America with the Valley Girls of the 1980s …, uptalk became common among young women across the country by the 1990s. It sounds so annoying and immature and I sure wish professional women would get a ‘CLUE’ and talk in a normal tone again.

You really missed the mark with this one. Of course our culture contributes to mental health disorders, that doesn’t make it less real for the people who are in it. The oversimplifications espoused in this podcast are potentially dangerous. Be more careful.

I had the pleasure of attending a discussion between General Yeager and Me. Anderson at Oshkosh sometime in the late ‘90’s. I was the first in line to get in- waited for over an hour to get a front seat. I don’t even remember the topics- I was in too much awe with their presence. But I do very much remember ONE thing. Sitting in the front row, listening to every word and not ever making a sound or distraction- at the very least due to respect, General Yeager turned and stared right at me with a look that no one under his command would have wanted. His eyes were right on me. I know I did nothing, and I’m good with knowing that, but I saw a look that enemy fighter pilots feared would never be looking through a gunsight.

Recently listened to the book “The End of the World is just the Beginning” by Peter Zeihan. The whole time I was listening, I kept thinking how Origins USA is the perfect example of how the USA can best survive/thrive in the coming economic global upheaval. This postcard is very interesting. Many information about warfighting that I did not know about has been clarified.

I think most of us dip into this. I miss running with 2/5 in Ramadi and my time in the Corps. Nothing is ever really the same. Most of us probably get drunk, I’m guilty. But as Mr Ditrich just said be great at what you do now. Use the motivation you had in the Corps in your current field. It works. It gives you a mission and that’s what we combat veterans need.

You have a life and a purpose, so pull yourself together and really honor your friends. Do some good, the good for which your brothers fell. If you’re a nurse, be a good nurse for God’s sake. You can help shed a little light into the lives of others… and when you do that, when you can shine even the tiniest light in the very deep darkness some of us can find ourselves in… they will carry that for the rest of their lives. Even the tiniest spark in the deepest darkness can be seen light years away.

First off, thank you Jocko for all your service, in your military role, and now also in your civilian role. You have a big part in the upbringing of my 7 year-old girl and 4 year-old boy, showing them what it means to be a man, a leader, and a disciplined human being… and a true blue American. Thanks EC for bringing the aloha spirit!

After listening to the first half of this podcast, I wonder if any “alternative” sources had been consulted regarding Germany in the ’20’s and lead-up to the war, as well as regarding the aristocratic tradition.

Regarding the first, I would like to see what you think about “The Unnecessary War” by Patrick Buchanan. It opened my eyes to nuances to the pre-war time and especially softened the movie-like caricature of Germany and its situation. He brings up many, cited, details that are never talked about; and as you can see he goes against the theory that Hitler was planning to take over the world… regardless of the training being done ahead of time (discipline perhaps)

Likewise, an aspect that is often, deliberately, left out is the fear across Europe that what happened in Russia with the communist takeover, the abject brutality, the absolute destruction of life during Holomodor in the Ukraine in the early ’30’s, could happen in their country. While the fascist reaction to communism was severely overblown in hindsight, at the time there were communist activities in almost all mainland European countries, and why Mussolini, Franco in Spain, and the Vichy regime in France existed. For instance, Buchanan argues the possibility that Czechoslovakia invited Hitler to invade and help stop the communists that had overrun the east and looking to take over the entire country. Which they did many years later.

In a great Hardcore History episode on WWI, Dan Carlin elaborates on how Germany was considered non “aristocratic” by France and England, with WWI and the Versailles Treaty less about laying blame and more about putting down a second class country. Often not reported is that there is documented evidence that Hitler refused to bomb London many times, until all the civilian bombing by Churchill made him capitulate. Also documented is that he respected England, and France. With these sources you can see a perspective that he didn’t want Germany pushed around any more (Versailles), and that he was also dead set against communism. Dan Carlin also shows how all of Europe was afraid of Russia before communism, and Germany was at the front line with a uniquely evil mindset and leader.

Please, whoever is reading this, don’t twist this as a polar argument, that I must be siding with fascism and the Nazis mentioning these things. We need to be coldly objective to understand that history never a Hollywood movie script so we can avoid repeating it.

The communist overthrow and killing of the monarchy, and then hijacking for the subsequent government, was the first of what could have been an all out war against the “aristocracy”. You can say what you will, and war had been changing, but the “aristocracy”, at least until Napoleon, were the people that fought for the peasants. They sent their sons, not the people working their land, for they understood the cost of losing their land.

Finally, while nowadays you can look down on the “rich” sending their kids to college so they can move into the officer corps, in the old days the culture of the rich wasn’t as frivolous as it is now. It was much more like the older culture of the aristocracy, that they were grooming the future leaders that needed to make decisions to preserve their culture against constant attack, not grooming them to live off a trust fund. Instead of “rich” or “priviledged”, as my father and uncle went to college even though they were poor, you could say “upper class” or even better “educated”. You behavior, not your bank account, meant more back then.

Is there any way to talk about the concept of “fight, no matter the size” again with a different guest?

I would like to hear your analysis. Always great to listen to your interpretation.

Although hard to listen to, I listened to this episode twice to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Maybe some of the details were missed, and I’m sure the media messed up plenty. But the bottom line is we (LE) failed to enter the building and kill the suspect. The training curriculum after Columbine was all the same nationwide. If there is screaming/shooting, you go in. Whether it’s just you or you plus a few others. You go in fast , hard and run towards to chaos. Better the suspect shoots at you than children or teachers. To have that many officers outside the building waiting for a tactical team is unacceptable. That’s pre-Columbine thinking.
However, after a long career in law enforcement I know there are certain truths. One of those truths is when tested, you fall to the level of your training. If you’re highly trained, you perform at a high level. If you’re poorly trained, you will perform at a low level. Training can be focused on different areas: Low liability/low frequency, low liability/high frequency, high liability/low frequency and high liability/high frequency. Too often PD’s are focusing on low liability/low freq. Nobody is bleeding or dying here. The high liability stuff takes money, actors, time off the street. In other words, commitment from their city/town and the PD command structure. When budgets get squeezed (or defunded), typically the first thing that gets cut is training. Unless every PD has mandatory high liability training, we will continue to see failures like this one.
Sorry so wordy! I get pretty fired up over this topic and taught it for a long time. It breaks my heart to see it still happening.

Of all the interviews with men about war and warfighting, this is the best for any man to self-reflect and understand his demons. Confront the dragons honestly, understand your responsibility for them, accept it and fight hard to defeat them. And never give up. At any age. This is the best podcast yet Jocko. Thank you.

Jocko’s assessment was pretty much spot on, plus or minus a few details. Whether or not there was “continuous” shooting is irrelevant. The mission is to “Stop the Killing” and then “Stop the Dying.” Regardless of continuous shooting there were victims in there dying. That’s a HARD GO period, end of sentence. Although many agencies have piss poor training, your ZERO assessment of agencies that teach breaching is inaccurate. It’s as simple as this, do you want to lose little or lose big? Sitting on your hands waiting for some perceived advantage will guarantee you will lose big. This was a disgusting and embarrassing failure and there frankly is no excuse for it.

Stop making excuses for them. They trained there the week before and current doctrine for an active shooter is to engage ASAP. There is no justification for what they did other than cowardice.

Like many dangerous and potentially terminal illnesses, Depression is not always discernible until the individual is too sick to save. Like other such illnesses, check ins, and screenings when no symptoms are obvious can help prevent premature death due to disease. Depression is a disease. It is terminal sometimes. It is as simple, and as complicated, as that.

Jocko got a lot of stuff right in this, and a lot of things wrong.

The Chief sounds like a dope, I agree. “I didn’t think I’d need my radio…” clearly inexcusable.

Do we KNOW there was continuous shooting while the cops were outside the classroom for those 40 minutes? I don’t believe we know that. I doubt it to be the case.

They still saying there were 19 cops outside the classroom waiting? What’s the chances that those 19 cops, who were from different jurisdictions, were cowards or blindly followed orders to not make entry? Isn’t it more likely there was information on their end (like NO shooting) that made them think it made sense to not try entry?

Street cops don’t have flash bangs. And street cops have ZERO breaching training.

What was the construction of the door? They said it was steel core surrounded by a steel frame and concrete. Designed specifically to prevent forced entry.

What was the window makeup for these classrooms? It seems illogical that none of these cops thought to look through the windows or make entry through them, IF it was possible.

The parents on the outside can’t be let inside the school in that situation. The perimeter needed held…that’s the cold reality.

Is it not obvious that most kids were killed in that initial volley of 100+ rounds that happened BEFORE the cops were there?

Let’s not forget that at least one kid was killed as BORTAC made entry. That’s probably what the 19 cops outside the classroom were afraid of…pounding futility on that steel door, causing the shooter to start shooting again.

Let’s be careful what we believe from the MSM. There’s probably things that happened that are being mis-reported.

I recently started listening to the Jocko podcast. As I browsed The Jocko Podcast Website I was looking at all the books Jocko has covered in all his podcast. When I came across the book “The Knock at The Door.” I automatically thought to myself HOLYS#!%. I know that knock all so well. I froze and thought to myself, I have to listen to this episode right now. I mustered the strength to press play. As I sat in my office at the prison I work at I was flooded with a gamut of emotions. From the opening reading I was thrown right back to that day as if it was happening all over. My brother, 1st LT. Osbaldo Orozco was killed in Tikrit, Iraq on April 25, 2003. In the last 19 years I have not cried like I did this day in my office. Every word read from the book and everything Ryan talked about I experience firsthand. For once in the last 19 years, I did not feel alone and lost as I have in the past. No matter the relationship I was in or who was in my life I felt lost and alone. I have never been able to connect with someone where they understood where I was coming from. I have mastered the way to mask my pain and my feelings. I have three other brothers but we have never talked about our feelings or that day we all found out our brother was killed in Iraq. Listening to this podcast I felt a connection I have not felt in a long time. Similar to that feeling a child lost in a grocery store or shopping mall feels when they finally find their mother they were desperately looking for. I still struggle with life and finding myself. My kids have had to pay the price because of it. Listening to this podcast has reassured me I don’t have to continue to feel alone or lost. I have ordered the book and look forward in reading it and at the same time I dread it.

This is a great podcast! I have been taking notes for several reasons. Primarily enjoying this as my son is high functioning Asperger but is really struggling with motivation. He is nearly failing school, poor sleep, awful sleep schedule, and wants to online game and watch You Tube, Twitch, etc. constantly. We have tried therapy and several medications, but there is nothing on the market to assist him in gaining concentration. I have shared some of what I learned about his cortisol pulse and ascidium rhythm with him. I plan on telling him something new everyday to hopefully gain his interest. He is nearly 18 and I have a lot of work to do to get him to be productive. Thank you again for this information. Also, as a police officer, I know all about the random intermittent reward! Great series of podcasts with Ben Milligan. I will definitely get the book. Have you considered interviewing former US military vets who have volunteered in Ukraine? My brother-in-law, Mark Hayward, a former Army Special Forces medic, just returned from 7 weeks in-country. He trained Ukrainian soldiers and marines on Javelin missiles and had to “adapt and overcome” in many instances due to lack of equipment and training simulators. US DOD refused to provide training simulators until challenged in a recent US Senate hearing. Mark was interviewed about this problem on CNN on 5/2/2022. He was also featured in a Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ukrainian Forces Get Crash Courses on Javelin Missiles from U.S. Volunteers” published 4/29/2022. In addition, Mark Hayward was a founding member of “Team Rubicon” that volunteered in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Former US Marine Jake Wood told the story of Team Rubicon, a disaster relief organization of 125,000 former military members, in his book Once a Warrior.

Hey Jocko! Something stood out to me when you were going over this book. Somewhere in the episode, you mentioned Beowulf along with the alliterative verse that was originally written and translated into modern English. J.R.R. Tolkien (obviously the author of Lord of the Rings but also World War 1 veteran, Battle of the Somme) was one of the people who helped translate Beowulf into the modern English. He also uses alliterative verse all through his writings, as is also very evident in Chamberlains writings. Thought it was very cool you recognized this and pointed it out as well. It has an interesting way of really popping out at you when read aloud.

If you fly into Billings and have time, head west over to the Canyon Creek Battlefield which is north of Laurel. On September 13, 1877 Chief Joseph and 125 warriors held off the Seventh Cavalry led by Colonel Samuel Sturgis. The stand-off allowed 800 Nez Perce to continue on their way from Oregon to Canada. Unfortunately, their best efforts came up short and ended in the Bear Paw Mountains in north central Montana. I grew-up in south central Montana and soaked up this history as a young person. Chief Joseph would be worthy of a pod cast too. His story is very interesting.

I wish this was recorded video as well. I think it adds depth to the communications seeing faces. Great chats, very interesting perspectives. Please keep it up.

Weed is a gateway drug for many and that is a fact. Most don’t go from drinking to cocaine or pills. They usually try weed, and some stop there. Many move on to other things. I would consider alcohol a gateway drug too in all honesty. Joe doesn’t give a rip about it though. He is a close friend as are several DEA and FBI. They are concerned with the following; prescription analogues, heroin, crack and meth. The rest is not a factor. Joe is a great human being and is a guy who never complains about what he has lost. He lives his life fully and more should look on that part of this message. Love the guy like family and see him often. Joe will change the world for the better.

Holmes (Kemp) who was spend time with the Teams during Gulf Storm out of the NATO base Porto/Naples and has a great story, or were married/sisters to those who were, (Ryan Manion 201) which i know did and her story was powerful.

Amazingly, I haven’t listened to many podcasts in the past, but stumbled upon Jocko’s content searching leadership videos on YouTube. This was the first episode I listened to and enjoyed hearing about the many lessons the Admiral learned throughout his career. I’ll be a loyal listener going forward. I particularly enjoyed hearing the thoughts of the Admiral on dealing with the aftermath of war. As a combat veteran, I often struggle with an outlet to deal with some of these issues. I keep my head down and keep grinding to get out of my own head, but admittedly, there are times where I take one step forward and two steps back. It was nice to hear another combat veteran discuss that these feelings are normal. Keep pushing forward, but don’t push the demons deep inside. Thanks Jocko and team for the content!

First of all, it’s an honor to be on the show (in case I make it to the podcast)!

My name is Thomas, 30 years old, living in germany. You already answered the question about how to get up early in a few podcast sessions, but I still have a rough time to make it a habit.

I need way more sleep then my girlfriend needs. Besides from that, my girlfriend is a pretty light sleeper, so almost every time I go to the bathroom at night or have an early alarm, it is pretty much guaranted she will not only wake up but take really long to sleep in again.

Even if I am awake early (not out of bed), I feel like “why should I get up already?”. Yes, I could work on a little programming project I do or play a videogame I like, but that’s stuff I could also do after work as well but does not motivate me enough to get up. It like my back is glued to the bed.

So, I feel like, my problem has to do with why I should get up rather than actualy doing it. I also feel like forcing myself to do it with willpower somehow (had several tries over the last 10 years, did not work for more then 2 weeks) would be the “Disciplin equals freedom” or “Extrem Ownership” way, but not the kind, paranting way to myself.

There was a time when I woke up at 4:30 am, went to the gym, had a shower and felt awesome leaving the gym at 6 am seeing people coming in later then me. But even that fainted after approx 2 weeks.

When I wake up early, I actualy feel really good and proud of myself. The last attampt was half a year ago, when I tried to go for a little run after waking up early. After one week, I cut my route short. After that day, I quit again.

I am not good at giving up. That’s why I am still trying to figure it out after 10 years of failed attampt I know that I have to make waking up early a habit before I add several other habits (otherwise its not going to work out anyway). I feel like, waking up early is the key to a successful life! Hope you can help me!

I’d like to hear Jocko compare McNamara’s 100k project to the Iraqi Security Forces training and what chain of command pressures were similar and different. I believe there are similarities in the chain of command where pressure was applied to lower ranks in both situations to get it going.

Jocko, this episode makes me so made at the Army, government, and the dodgers. Once again the government abuses their power and hurts the citizens.

I get the military didn’t have choice but how many lives did they ruin. Guy did hard time because he refused to train.

The guys who ducked the draft and the reasons are incredible. Rich white guys.

There was a third option for McKenzie, submit his resignation in opposition, and continue to execute his duties to the best of his abilities, developing and executing the plan within the provided constraints, until such time as he was properly relieved. The real decision at that point would have been to do so publicly, or privately. If done publicly, the question would have been timing of that announcement. I believe how we should have managed resignation would be a most interesting discussion.

Millitary wives, that would be an awesome podcast. 10k miles away, I still can smell young bull Jocko leadership style being standing next to a crib while you go shopping arround honney.

I’ve listened to pretty much every podcast you and Echo have put out. And I have taken a lot from what y’all share. But personally this one blow me away.

Not just the history. I have never heard of that. I felt like an idiot. Now I’m going to dig a lot more into it. But I feel like every other turn. I saw something else about information that is absolutely priceless to everyday life and living in society.

I relistened to this podcast. I am ordering the source materials to get a more complete understanding of this history.

I found two parts of this podcast interesting enough to grab to books. The first is when a junior leader would recognize the most vulnerable nature of these mentally limited soldiers and offer some measure of protection in the chaotic environment of war. The second is hearing the stories of when tasked with a low stress environment and somewhat mundane task these soldiers did outstanding service. Jocko had a quick discussion of stress reactions which drove home the point.

Jocko I think this book would be good to re-review or recommend to your viewers. The same progressive tyrannical and demonic ideas that encourage people to exterminate others we are again seeing with attacks on our medical liberty, freedom of conscience and assembly via vaccines and masks.

Bro, I’m just f*cking with Jocko. This was a couple of years ago and I was not offended or upset. Listen to all of Jocko’s stuff and I think this is exactly the kind of email he loves after he gets through 10,000 blow j*bs. Man I’m way too old to have any ego left that ship sailed a long time ago. Thks for reading.

Usually Jocko is calm, balanced, and hard to read emotionally. This podcast stands out because you can clearly hear the rage in Jocko’s voice whilst conveying the many blunders by McNamara, and his arrogant disregard of the value of Human Resources. Jocko even lets a couple expletives slip which is very rare.

At the conclusion of this podcast I felt like I needed a shower. Hearing about the policy decisions forced by McNamara made me feel as if I’d been rolled in filth.

Thank you for sharing these hard truths and historical blunders. Hopefully they will never be repeated.

I’ve read every criticism of it on Reddit, and the fact that all the haters who came out of the woodwork made you, Jocko, to erase Kelsi from your podcasts like her appearance never even happened – is appalling, weak leadership, and sexist.
Kelsi’s recollection of combat events from 10 years ago probably wasn’t perfect, but don’t take down the whole episode like she is an utter fraud. Let’s not equate her to Elisabeth Holmes.
I personally came to this episode to learn more about her recovery journey, results she saw, and the Heroic Hearts Project’s effectiveness.
Not finding this potentially helpful testimony here anymore is deeply disappointing.

Just listened to the Podcast with the Oscar De la Hoya SEAL with the MBA. I kinda felt sorry for him because as usual Jocko dominated the conversation. Especially the last 15 minutes or so when the BIG PITCH for everything Jocko. Let’s review: Jocko t-shirts, hoodies, f*cking boots, belts, hats, judo clothing, kids books, books by every Navy Seal who ever served, energy drinks (made by GOD, aka Jocko), corporate retreats, Jocko’s gym, leadership training for psycho millionaires, by Jocko (of course). That’s the short list. On occasion he will mention a product that he does not sell, manufacture, or hawk. However the product has to be made by a guy who killed twenty terrorists ( a lot of them bare-handed). won the Congressional Medal of Honor, and lived to talk about it (of course on Jocko’s podcast). That commercial last about 2.1 seconds and you check to see if you didn’t happen to hit the super fast forward button on your device. By the way there is only one guy alive who has done this so there is little hope that he will suck any of your disposable income away from Jocko world. Speaking of which if you bought one of everything that Jocko sells on his various websites it will cost you a cool $26,877.91. That is just on Jocko controlled sites. Irt breaks down like this, General Merch-4215.42, Energy drinks & Jocko Fuel-1431.82, Jiu Jitsu stuff-8,571.00 (Who f*cking knew wrestling clothes could get so pricey?) But the motherload is Durable Goods such as boots, jeans, belts etc that checks in at 12,495.78 hang on you can buy all the Jocko books that are out there for 163.89 My guess is that Jocko has not figured out how to nail you properly on that. Well just when you thought you were done with Jocko products f*cking Amazon has a whole “Jocko Products page” excluding his books. tack on another $299.64 for those products. Lastly there is a website called Red Bubble. You guessed it Red Bubble has a sh*t ton of Jocko goodies for a s little as little as 1.29 for a Jocko sticker that says; “Discipline equals freedom”. I’m guessing that those folks are just ripping off the Jocko brand. If they are expect Echo Charles to show up for Jocko’s cut. By the way Echo Charles is only a little less scary looking than Jocko. Let’s face it if Jocko was in prison one look at this serial looking like killer everyone in the yard would part like the Red f*cking Sea when he walked through. Joe Rogan who is not exactly a puss* says Jocko is like a silver back gorilla who will break your neck for fun (like he did working out some tough guy in Jiu Jitsu) one time. No thanks Jocko I’ll just wait for the latest and greatest Jocko product like Jocko’s Lear Jet for the newly minted millionaire or Jocko’s adventure tours to Yeman “where we get it everyday” for 10k a day (plus expenses).

What an amazing story! I grew up not far from Hope, and my son even has a wrestling meet in Austin, MN tonight! A big takeaway for me, is that Mr. Larson is so grateful for the good things in his life, and that’s what he focuses on. We have a lot to learn from the older generations. My dad was an army veteran, serving from 1968-1970. He was fortunate to get sent to Okinawa instead of Vietnam as an E5. He had just graduated from the U of M and married my mom, who was pregnant with my brother when he got drafted (Fort Campbell, KY). I wanted to join the army reserves, but my dad talked me out of it. It’s something I’ve always regretted not doing. He just passed away this year from Alzheimer’s, and was an amazing man. Thank you for always having great guests. It really puts life into perspective when you hear their stories. Thank you.

Thank you so much for having Mr. Larsen on today and for telling his story! I listen to your podcast regularly, and always find your content informative and inspiring. As a graduate student pursuing a MA in WWII Studies, however, today’s podcast was especially important to me. Oral and written histories are absolutely essential for remembering the past, not just as the official recorders notate it to be, but as the everyday men and women making the history tell it for themselves. Having just observed the 80th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the men who fought the war on our behalf are dwindling, which makes recordings like today’s podcast even more important. I don’t often feel the need to reach out and comment on content, but I felt as though a heartfelt thanks needed to be extended for this contribution. As always, the sincerest thank you to Mr. Larsen himself, as well. I have read countless books on the war, D-Day, and Omaha Beach, but hearing those who lived it tell their own story is very humbling, and I am always amazed that anyone made it through. What always shines through is the humility of the survivors, which in turn makes it impossible to be anything but humbled oneself.

First let me, say thank you for you service and all that you do, Jocko! Thank you for this episode. I have a soft spot for World War 2 vets to begin with, but this episode was extra special. The reason is my Dad was in the Red One (26 Infantry, Company K -Blue Spade), and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Here’s the crazy part: my Dad was a policeman in Austin Minnesota for 46 years, and retired in his 70s. When Mr. Larsen said his Dad was thrown in the city of Austin’s jail, my mouth started to drop, but when he said he lived in Austin for four years, it hit the floor. There is a chance he and my Dad knew each other. By virtue of his position, everyone in town pretty much my Dad. My Dad’s name was Duane Klingerman, who passed on in 2018. He had been drafted at the age of 17. Again, thank you so much. This one meant a lot.

This hits home. My dad was a combat engineer in Europe. Fought with Patton in North Africa, landed at Utah beach, liberated Cherbourg, broke out with Patton and Bradley at St. Lo, stormed across France and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Lost his Thompson when the Germans shelled the pontoon bridge he was building across the Rhine and he had to swim back to the west side. He helped liberate Cologne and ended the war on the Czech boarder. I shouldn’t be here, there should be no way that Dad survived all this. Thanks for the podcast, gave me a reason to think about and thank my Dad for his service.

I decided to transition back to the real world after three months shy of 12 years BECAUSE of the military incompetence discussed in this podcast (before listening to this for the record). What one has to consider at around the time of Crimea and similar wars is that the officers valued their possessions more than their men. Although they did to some degree view the men as their possessions but also disposable commodities. They believed the men as subhuman and so could not make any valuable thoughts. Discipline was imposed by Drill and the whip.

The officers through their upbringing that they were semi-godlike and so could not be wrong or be questioned.

Things have changed but not fully and not everywhere .

Something one has to consider at the time of the Crimean War etc was that the Upper Classes, as a throw back to feudal times, didn’t consider the “men” to be men. But merely objects or tools. They believed their physical possessions were more valuable than their men and that the men were indeed their possessions, but easily replaceable. They could not believe the men had a valuable contribution to make as they were considered as sub-human to them. And disciplined was enforced by drill and whip.

I would really like to see an interview with a Vietnam helicopter pilot by the name Mark Garrison. He wrote a book: ”GUTS ‘N GUNSHIPS: What it was Really Like to Fly Combat Helicopters in Vietnam Kindle”.

Vietnam veterans deserve a lot of respect for the insane courage they show in their stories. It would make my day to see him on the podcast.

I have to admit I was gutted when you were in the part about Butler going around and seeing the Vets in the various hospitals. Since the start of the war in Afghanistan and GWOT (Global War on Terror), the Pentagon spending totaled over $14T. 1/3 to 1/2 went to defense contractors (Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and General Dynamics). Some of those corporations profits are legit but the amount of corrupt business practices as it relates to waste, price gouging or profiteering defy description. The revolving door door between the defense industry and the military has to stop? 4 of the past 5 Secretaries of Defense came from one the top five arms contractors James Mattis (Board member at General Dynamics), Patrick Shanahan (executive at Boeing), Mark Esper (Head of Government relations at Raytheon), LLoyd Austin (Board member of Raytheon). Brown University (Watson Institute) wrote a sobering paper on the Profits of War as it relates to Corporate Beneficiaries of the Post 9/11 Pentagon Spending Surge. (Sep. 13, 2021).

Hard lessons, to be sure, but not without a hope that exists within the periphery of that waste. Within the waste of an Afghan girl’s no longer available education is the rage to take it back. Entropy gets a bad rap. But the entropy of capitalism is the only thing thus far to create 20 years of relative stability wherein marginalized populations got a chance to learn and, perhaps, inishallah, learn to fight back. Time will tell if those tuition payments turn out educational dividends, but we do the name of progress a disservice to disregard or passingly praise the greed that might have made those tuition payments less substantial, if not more evenly distributed to the soldier-educators.

Too add to your point, I don’t believe “democracy building” was ever a real goal, or at least it was always subordinate to profit. We can see how US foreign policy has dealt with unfavorable democracies when a nation votes to profit from its own soil, such as Arbenz in Guatemala (fruit), Allende in Chile (copper), and Morales in Bolivia (lithium); it’s a long list. Similarly, state-owned enterprise may be labelled “communist”, or it may be built by the U.S. like in Japan or South Korea–it hinges on whether a nation will serve American capital. The United States is a capitalist empire, and profit is put before people in every sector, although suffering is largely outsourced (child slavery for Nestle comes to mind, but again it’s a long list). Big business is, as it functions in our lives, big government without the democracy, without the representation, and it has long since taken over what we recognize as our government: it’s a paradox with no easy answer, but most nations with an ok amount of wealth have struck a balance that’s tilted way more towards the freedom of average working families than the USA. That’s why most young Americans can’t relate to the sense of freedom and self-determination that so many non-Americans take for granted: for example, educational and medical debt, completely unnecessary (i.e. barely exists) in any free country, have weighed down such a large proportion of us that we can’t afford to take responsible risks in a free market anymore. It all comes down to what you’re saying about our citizens and treasure being exploited for profit. The love of money is the root of all evil, and after many years of studying American foreign policy and seeing its effects on the ground outside these borders–and trying real hard, even lapsing in denial, to come up with a different conclusion–I have to believe, however bad it makes me feel, that the USA is an evil empire. It sounds hyperbolic, but I can’t try to follow Jesus on one hand and wave the flag with the other because the two are at extreme odds with one another. It makes me sick to admit it, and I’m not out here burning flags and disrespecting veterans, but I am being honest…I can’t serve two masters.

Of course Hitler was evil. What allowed Hitler to come into power? I would argue that WWI was key, a useless war in my opinion, look into the profiteering after WWI and how Germany was economically raped, and I have no sympathy for the Nazis etc.

As far as taking local resources as a reason for war, not really even necessary these days, pay to break it, pay to fix it, pay to keep the cycle going, pay to create a Democracy while our republic fails, pay to occupy etc.

A strong Military is necessary, war sometimes is inevitable, but far too often that’s the default for types that think our citizens and treasure are nothing but resources to be used for their own gain, both financial and political. Democracy building is the latest example of failed policy that costs us a huge amount human and financial capital.

Fascinating. One of the big questions is: How did the U.S. Navy come to have one of the world’s premier land-capable unconventional warfare units (the SEALS)? The answer is pride and stupidity … both the Army and the Marines, the obvious services to pull that off, f— it up. They both thought primarily in terms of infantry. They thought of commandos as primarily aggressive and determined soldiers. And sure they are … but more importantly they have special skills. So their notion was: use those people to train other infantry—because they’re just the same but better. This ignores that those guys—if they have been properly trained—have special skills. So at best they saw them as an elite, at worst as a suicide squad to throw into impossible situations on the conventional battlefield. This ignores that they could undertake special purposes—long range reconnaissance, coastal raids, sabotage far behind enemy lines, kidnapping of key enemy personnel, etc., etc. This is stuff that the average infantry soldier/marine doesn’t do and doesn’t need to do.

The guy the U.S. Marines put in charge of “Raiders” was the son of a congregational minister who knew the Roosevelts. He refused to have his men trained by the British Royal Marines; he fired trained personnel sent to him; the training was irrelevant and perfunctory; many of the men couldn’t swim; he had no concept of tactics; when they came under fire in the Pacific, he tried to surrender to the Japanese in a panic, but the men he sent couldn’t locate a Japanese to surrender to … a complete debacle. He was also obsessed with communism and tried to indoctrinate the Marines with the concept of “gung ho”—which actually means “all together”.

I’m struck again by how stupid and incompetent people in important positions can be and probably always have been.

The U.S. Navy’s saving grace was it had no infantry of its own, so didn’t have pride revolving around what an infantryman was. It was task-focused: what do we need to do? Let’s train people to do that.

This all works if you have good intel.

Hello Lieutenant Commander Willink sir. Thank you very much for your dedication and service to our nation. Since reading Extreme Ownership, I take full responsibility for mistakes I make. My wife is Chinese and I having spent time in China realized they are raising tough young men. If our young men (Americans) do not learn the principals of ownership then we will be weak in comparison. These lessons you are teaching are deeply important to our society. Recently I read a book titled “Freedom at All Cost” by Sergeant Daniel K. Luc who was awarded the Silver Star Medal for Combat Valor during the battle Loc Ninh in Vietnam, April 1972. Sergeant Luc was one of four soldiers who survived the assault of 5th VC division joined by the 272nd and 273rd artillery regiments, who were apart of the 35,000 NVA soldiers advancing toward An Loc. Loc Ninh was a small military outpost with a few hundred ARVN soldiers and a few Americans. The battle that took place was extremely brutal, even with the help of two AC130 Spectre gunships and B-52 bombers dropping CBUs and napalm almost on top of their position, Loc Ninh was eventually overrun and the few remaining soldiers had to fight their way through enemy territory back to An Loc. Sergeant Luc was an ARVN interpreter and in this book he teaches the history of Vietnam leading up to the war, the battles that took place, and how he and 500,000 other SVs fled the country on fishing boats after the communist came to power. Sergeant Luc eventually found his way to America, and is one of the only remaining witnesses to the events that took place during that battle. I do highly recommend you read his amazing story of survival, which we credits God Almighty for. Thank you and God bless you. – Jason W. Henry

The secret to life is don’t quit….well, until it’s really time to quit. I’m putting that on a dichotomy for sure. I know plenty of people who should have quit things or modified their approach, but didn’t and ran themselves into the ground.

But, default setting is…definitely…don’t quit! Otherwise you will not get through the difficult middle ground of a project….where you are having to maneuver this way and that…..or never even get the ball rolling in the start up phase.

The reading was intense and very affecting. As a person rebellious by nature I hope I’d be one of the ones that said no, but what we don’t know about ourselves is overwhelming – we only know the tip of the iceberg with the subconscious being a huge submerged factor.

That said, the person you’re with on the podcast… are they high? They seemed to have a hard time articulating ideas. This needed to be a serious conversation, and it would have been instructive to have a guest who could add more from a psychological or deeper perspective (sorry).

I discovered your podcast via the “Fighter Pilot Podcast” during lockdown last year and have really enjoyed listening.

Last month, I had a conversation with a young man in my son’s class who had just finished his freshman year of college. This young man had grown up with my son and i had coached him in several sports and he was part of our middle school carpool. To my surprise (and even more so my wife who witnessed the conversation) the young man thanked me for impacting his life in positive way and for lessons learned.

The young man then asked if I had any additional advice that I might share, and I asked;
“do you make your bed every morning”? The answer was not surprisingly a no and so I suggested he should start there. Ironically, even after spending 6 years in the military I had gotten out of the habit of making my own bed but started doing so again during covid. Make bed, work out, go to work – all added structure during a time when there wasn’t much structure.

I just bought 2 copies each of “Hero Code” and “Sea Stories” for me and my son. I bought THREE copies of “make your bed” – going to give a copy to that young man.

Hey Jocko, Thank you for doing the episode on the Armenian genocide. I too am an American, descendant of Armenian and a descendant from a family that escaped the genocide. They were assisted in their escape by LDS missionary’s which made it possible for me to be alive. I still remember my grandma as a young boy having night terrors of the old country. Coming from a Canadian, who’s listened to every podcast you’ve released, this one was painful. The constant complaining and bravado is ridiculous. You gotta find a better representation of the Canadian military.

Dating colleagues can offer any other avenue in which personnel can locate meaningful connections with each different. For employees who are in a place of work romance: open the strains of communication together with your supervisors sooner in place of later. Ask, “What’s your perspective on workplace romance, and the way are we able to best take care of this example?” Also, be sincere while colleagues ask if the rumors are true. Don’t cross overboard and expose intimate information about your dating, however sharing weekend plans or anniversaries can build trust and forge deeper connections with coworkers.

I’m a descendant of Armenian immigrants, who escaped the massacres of the mid 1890’s and settled in the US. They were tipped off to leave before the Turks came “to slaughter the village.” I now have a better understanding of what that really meant.

For you to explore and shed light on this topic that is at the center of the hearts and minds of the Armenian community is awesome. Thank you.

Great podcast, especially this one. Great examples and I agree Operation Overlord is not an example of a direct approach. Two examples occur to me that might be utilizing a direct approach from a certain perspective, though I don’t mean to contradict the central lesson. Alexander at the River Granicus personally led a charge into the front of the Persians after surveying the situation. Even that though may be considered indirect, in the sense that the Persians had deployed mainly on the flanks, expecting the main attack there as I understand it. So it was still indirect mainly I guess.

I think maybe a harder example to contradict might be political leadership. In some places, I think America being one of them, people respond to direct leadership. People rallied behind Teddy Roosevelt when he took his message directly to the masses. He generally laid out his principles in straightforward terms, stated historical example, and inspired. That may be an indirect approach in a broader political strategy, in the sense that he was laying the groundwork for the greater interaction with the legislative branch, so it was still indirect at some times. But in rallying the people and in the election itself, in his direct interaction with the voting and broader public, that seems relatively direct to me.

It is offered to the employees to be able to pay their house hire. Light infantry was expected to operate in the attack via deep infiltration and in the defense by hiding and being bypassed and then operating in the enemy rear areas. They were fully expected to operate about two weeks on their own. This concept was validated during REFORGER 90 – “Centurion Shield.” This was the era when body armor was a helmet and a BDU shirt. All movement and attack was based on stealth and moving around and never at the enemy. You had to out think because you lacked the brute force.

Thanks for that tidbit of information. I am listening to the interview now. I first read the book in 1974, as a Freshman in high school. It’s my favorite book & started me on my journey towards becoming an Infantry Officer. I’m glad I kept it and it is very tattered now. I have read it 4 times and Jocko inspired me to go over it a 5th time.

Aho was of Finnish descent which might explain his rugged tough demeanor. “Sisu” is the unconditional perseverance, grit, that is strongly valued in the Finnish culture both old and modern. Also, when Finns migrated to America they were known to “speak like frogs” due to their strong accent. Truly fitting for a fine Frogman! No wonder he preferred the Marine Corps.

I’m only 17 years old but to listen to Jocko it’s a motivation to do better every day. My dream is to join the special forces in two years so to hear Jocko talk and say that you can!!! man ya i’m going for it!!!!!

This is related to both episodes. I’m not on any Social Media anymore (I use to follow you on Facebook & participate on the 0430 wake up/workout session but I am totally off any Social Media because it took up too much of my time and social media seems so nefariously “controlling” and I don’t like being controlled so, yeah, I’m off Social Media) so this is my only way to contact you on your recent podcasts, 273 & 274. I was originally going to just clarify some terms for Echo but these 2 podcasts morphed into philosophies discussed by both you and Echo in the podcast caused me to respond with my form of what I call “Public Journaling.” (Journaling my thoughts in a public discussion, which the receiver, yourself, probably discards when he receives it. )
First, Soldier is my favorite book (read it the first time, have read it 4 times). Soldier was the book that started me on my journey to becoming a Soldier and Leader myself. Soldier and LTC Herbert was a thorn in side of the Army in the 70’s as About Face & COL Hackworth was a thorn in the side of Army in the 80’s. I am about 12 years older than you and one of the many differences between you and me is that while I do share the Warrior Spirit you have, I entered the Marine Corps during the Post-Vietnam era and being in the military was seen as a negative by the youth of my generation. As a result, I kept that spirit subdued because saying you wanted to experience the Warrior lifestyle was a way to be ostracized socially, so I kept my desire to be an Infantryman quiet and never let any of my social circle know I joined the Marine Corps until the day I left for Boot Camp. I found out how anti-military my community was (Encinitas, California) after I graduated from Boot Camp when almost all of the people I grew up with (with the exception of 1) did, in fact, ostracize me. Good! I learned I had one good friend and I could also just be proud of who I was; a Marine. The anti-military attitude would change over the years as President Reagan & Chairman John Vessey transformed the military into an organization of respect again. In fact, I suggested Soldier to you on FB Messenger about 3 or 4 years ago, when I started doing the 0430 wake up with your Facebook Group. After your podcast, I have started reading my tattered volume of Soldier for the 5th time. Interestingly, while I have the words from the book practically memorized, I found your recitation on Herbert’s life growing up to be more interesting than I recall and I am spending more time reviewing LTC Herbert’s early life than just reading through that part of the book as fast as I can.
But I thought I would share, with Echo, the origins of the terms that piqued Echo’s curiosity; Guerilla & Fragging. As you pointed out the term Guerrilla is a “part-time” or undercover soldier working in enemy territory. The origin of Guerrilla comes from the Penninsular War in Spain (1808 to 1814) Where the Spanish, Portugese and the British fought against Napoleon’s French Army and Guerrillo’s – Spanish “Irregular Soldiers” were used extensively to help defeat the French. That is where the term “Guerrilla” comes from. On a side note, the term “Commando,” which militaries of the world equate with elite soldiers, comes from the British military experience fighting the Dutch farmers/settlers of South Africa in the 1890’s. The Dutch would very much kick the living dog crap out of the British when the first Boer (the Dutch term for Farmer) War occurred. The Boers would form informal military units called Commandos whenever they faced threats from the various African tribes in the area they settled of South Africa. So when the Dutch in Europe lost a trade war with the British, the British got South Africa and ended up fighting the Dutch (who called themselves Afrikaaners). Why is the term Commando related to Guerrilla? Because Commandos are the main soldiers that go behind enemy lines and train Guerrillas. Guerilla’s can also be considered Militias or Partisans. The French Resistance during World War 2 against the Germans were Guerrillas. The NVA trained the Viet Cong, the Green Berets trained the Montangnards and the Hmong during the Vietnam War. The Iranian Quds Force, along with Fedayeen Saddam and former Iraqi soldiers were the commandos who trained the insurgents trained the Iraqi Insurgency during the recent conflict in Iraq.
While the killing of your own leadership by subordinates has always occurred in war, the origin of the term “Fragging” was specific to the Vietnam War because of the primary weapon used to kill small unit leaders. The weapon used mostly during the Vietnam war was the M67 FRAGmentation Grenade, so that is where the term “Fragging” originates. Fragging is a major reason the American Military went to an All-Volunteer force in 1975 because there was a HUGE increase in Fragging during the Vietnam War. At the beginning of the Vietnam War, most of the American Combatants were experienced volunteers; well-trained professional soldiers that were trained & wanted to fight. As the war wore on, the population of military volunteers went down due to combat attrition or by getting out of the military. By 1968, the war in Vietnam became increasingly fought by Draftees; Soldiers who had been forced by law to serve in the military. So by the time LTC Herbert got to Vietnam, many of the Soldiers are Draftees who don’t want to be there and have to be forced to fight, forced to be disciplined and are in conflict with the Officer Corps in Vietnam, who are still mainly Volunteers and find the environment very hard to accomplish their military mission. When you read the book Soldier, you realize a major reason WHY the U.S. Military went to an All-Volunteer force after the Vietnam War. &, in my opinion, during our entire conflict in GWOT, our military maintained a motivated solid professional posture during this conflict as compared to the conflict in Vietnam because our military is voluntary (even when you have been “Volun-told”) As another side note Echo, if you remember the law, when you turn 18, you are required to go down to the post office and sign up to be conscripted as a Draftee in the military. That law is put into place in case the U.S. gets in another major war like World War 2.
There were many reasons atrocities happened in the Vietnam War, none of them morally excusable or justifiable. 1. The Vietnamese conducted War that way. The Viet Cong were notorious for committing war crimes against the civilian population, even before Americans increased their involvement in Vietnam. As a result, many American soldiers de-humanized both the enemy and the civilian population they were assigned to protect. So American soldiers would see Vietnamese civilians as less than human because it seemed that the Vietnamese didn’t care about each other and treated each other as less than human. This made it easier for Americans to rationalize de-humanizing the Vietnamese & rationalize committing war crimes. 2. The American soldier couldn’t trust the population, so in frustration, they committed atrocities. Civilians would lie to American soldiers, either because they were under threat from the Viet Cong or because they didn’t like Americans. Children would run up to Americans and they would have explosives that would kill Americans. As a result, it was a very dangerous and stressful environment to be a soldier. 3. Because so many Americans were killed with booby traps and died as a result of booby traps or sniper attacks, where the Viet Cong used Hit & Run tactics where you never faced your enemy, often times, an American unit would take out revenge on the first group of Vietnamese in a village they came upon during their daily patrols. They would take out their frustration because they would rationalize it by saying to themselves, “Some of these people are VC who probably set up the booby traps.” 4. Because the U.S. military relied heavily on Draftees to conduct the war after 1968, due to U.S. Military attrition, Draftees didn’t care and had little incentive to protect civilians and also fostered an overall resentment towards the Vietnamese population (“Why don’t the Vietnamese fight their own Damn War! Why do we have to fight it for them!” attitude) which is another reason the U.S. went to an All-volunteer force after Vietnam. I have seen some interviews with LTC Herbert. He stated it all depended on the Commander. If a Commander ordered and then enforced a “No War Crimes” policy, there usually weren’t any war crimes committed in that AO (Area of Operations) However, you have to realize, A Battalion Commander was only on a 6 month Command Tour (Ridiculous!) So the next Battalion Commander might not emphasize adherence to the Laws of Land Warfare.
Further on in your podcast, you and Echo discussed the post-war controversy surrounding LTC Herbert and the conflict with his chain of command, particularly with the Comments made by Major Grimshaw where he comes into conflict with statements made by LTC Herbert. I tried very hard to investigate more into the controversy surrounding Herbert, Grimshaw and Herbert’s chain of command (COC); Franklin and Barnes. I couldn’t draw enough information to discern what was the basis for Grimshaw’s accusations that Herbert wasn’t telling the truth. What I believe is that Generally, LTC Herbert told the truth about what he witnessed & the Grimshaw/Herbert inconsistency revolved around one incident. I guess the only conclusion I can draw from Herbert’s conflict with his COC is how they lived their lives after. LTC Herbert would receive his PHD in Psychology, become a respected member in his community and have a strong enough reputation to work with the local police department in Colorado. I don’t know what happened to Barnes. Colonel Franklin was relieved of his command in Vietnam, after LTC Herbert left due to incompetence and would later go to work for Wall Street in the 80’s after he retired from the Army, then subsequently be convicted of Securities Fraud in the 90’s and serve 5 years in prison. I think LTC Herbert came out ahead in the end. Enjoyed the podcast, take care.

While listing to this podcast I felt a wash of emotion come over me because it reminded me of the stories my elder relative told me as a child of his life.

He Vincent Smith grew up in a small coal mining town outside of PA. When Pear Harbor occurred he falsified his birth records, adding two years so he could join the military. He then drove the company cole truck to PA to enlist in the army, leaving the keys with a store clerk letting him know someone will be coming for these keys.

The line to enlist for the army was around the block, so he joined the Marines because it was a shorter line.

He was a member of the Marines 1st Division “The old guard”. As a jungle fighter in World War II, he fought in a dozen battles, among them–Guadalcanal, Tinian, the Tenaru River, Cape Gloucester, New Guinea, and New Britain.

He never spoke of the negative aspects of war, but instead told me only the fun stories. Such as getting a British LT drunk and getting “God Bless America” tattooed on his chest the night before shipping off to the Pacific.

I’m willing to bet you will find many unwritten stories of people like Col. Herbert and my family member Smitty all around cole country.

Mr Meyer. I am a Police Officer in Vancouver, Canada. I don’t know if you will read this but I wanted to say thank you. After 22 years on the street I had to pull myself off the road last year because of PTSD. I guess after seeing so much death and suffering it took its toll. It was hard for me as I was always under the impression of, “I didn’t serve and deploy. I don’t deserve to be diagnosed with this.” I was listening to Jocko podcast 277 where you spoke of your struggles, but also spoke of the struggles that cops have to face. Was a rare thing, especially from someone like yourself who has faced so much, to have what I, and other officers, have dealt with. I just wanted to say thank you. The thing that really strikes me about this whole situation is that by the time the Vietnam War happened, American military leadership in Vietnam had grown arrogant to the point of delusion, and draftees, who didn’t want to be there in the first place could clearly see the hypocrisy and that they were just tools to advance the careers of some of these officers. Who would want to die so some arrogant bastard could get another ribbon on their uniform, or another star, or the next award or promotion? By that time, the true American warrior spirit had been subsumed by men who were intoxicated with power, and who had no interest or business being in or commanding combat battalions.

Tony Herbert’s predicament was that he was from another generation, and was in a whole other category really, of men who were dyed-in-the-wool, down to the DNA made to be warriors. Men who answer destiny’s call like Herbert can not survive in an environment of fakes and phonies who have all but taken over control. By the time he got into Vietnam, it was too late. He was able to make his own battalion badass, but powerless to stop the corruption everywhere else, and when he tried they character assassinated him, dragged him through the media mud, falsely accused him, all to save their own egos. It happened all the time, and still happens today.

What I appreciate about Herbert was that he was just such a no sh*t kind of a guy, to a fault sometimes. He could be so black and white that he could get judgmental and self-righteous, but despite those faults, he wasn’t wrong when it came to how an army should be. As far as warriors go, he was the top 1%. I think he just didn’t have the wisdom to understand the complex circ*mstances of the times and how to “render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,” while maintaining his own integrity as a commander.

Jocko seems that your heart desire to interview this man was accomplished by Studs. Definite answers to the heart rending questions you express.

Firstly, my apologies for the spelling mistake on your name. It was an autocorrect error and no disrespect was meant by it.

Secondly, I think we are now both more or less on the same page here. The disagreement was only around the statement that you made with Jocko as you described your role as “Single handedly” evacuating the Canadian Embassy. That statement came across as offensive to the outstanding soldiers that I served with on that mission which prompted me to reach out here. I am not taking anything away from the role you played and in fact complimented you on it. Being a lone operator with a fixer on the recce phase is very impressive and frankly any of us would love to have taken part in that. In addition, you were a lone operator on the SAP which is also impressive and we appreciate you for it. All of that to say and you provided your more detailed version of this showing that no-one single handedly evacuated the Canadian Embassy. The embassy was evacuated by my team in partnership with you and your services and because of everyone involved, it was completed safely.

Lastly, the awards comment was in response to Mrs. Stott’s comments (before deleted) directed at one of my teammates to enjoy the awards or accolades (I forget its exact wording). We never asked for recognition because we serve for each other, and I know you get it.

This was the FASTEST 5 hours I have ever spent in my life. Just… incredible. THANK YOU Jocko and Tulsi for a courageous and thoughtful conversation that is so so important. My faith in our country is solidified.

Please do an episode on the Alamo Scouts that were active in the Philippines during WW2. They were instrumental in “The Great Raid” on Cabanatuan that freed over 500 POWs a Japanese Camp, killing an estimated 500-1000 Japanese Imperial Soldiers along the way. I think that you’ll find similarities between them and the UDT Divers that are the progenitors of the modern-day SEALs. There are numerous books that have them as features, but very few where they are the main subject. Michael F. Dilley, the founder of the modern SERE School and military historian might be a good guest for interview. Thanks for all you for all your service and all that you continue to do.

Hi Steve,

Firstly I must emphasise that I would never use platforms like this to discuss operations, and conscious they are not the place to highlight sensitive information. However I feel your statement above needs addressing and clarity to fill in the many gaps.

Yes you and your CPO team were tasked to protect the Canadian Embassy staff on Operation Lobb, and did so admirably for the 5 months and on the lead up to the Embassy closing. Unfortunately when the Tripoli International airport got burnt down, this limited an extraction option for you and so the road move to Tunis was the only viable option available.

Having already successfully executed earlier evacuations with some NGO staff during this period and the fact I had proven the road move route, this made me the perfect candidate. I was then contracted as a private security operator to assist the Canadian Embassy in the evacuation from Tripoli to Tunis.

The operation was called “Beavertail” and this name was chosen by myself.

With the British Embassy having been shot at the week before near camp 24 this was causing concern and worry, and so on the days leading up to the event I went out to visit the militias at camp 24 to explain the situation. I then did this with all the tribal elders in the major towns along the coastal road in Zawiyah, Sabratah and Zauara to ensure that they were aware of the situation and show courtesy to them.

I also had identified safe houses along the route large enough to accommodate your team and vehicles should there be an emergency or you needed a safe haven/ stop short, this information along with the route were fed back to your team.

On the morning of the evacuation, I moved forward ahead of your convoy as a SAP (Security Advance Party) in a soft skin vehicle and not in an armoured 4×4 as to maintain a low profile. I should also add that in my vehicle was also a cat belonging to one of your diplomats because your team refused to travel with it. This vehicle was a surveillance vehicle for me to be able to report back to your Team Leader the ground situation and act as an early warning system.

When I got to the first designated waypoint I communicated with your Team leader (initials CW) that it was then safe for you to proceed and move off. When you got to camp 24, your reception there was very different from that the British had received due to the earlier meetings that had been conducted whilst you were back in Palm City.

I continued communicating with your Team Leader through all the towns and checkpoints to relay back real time information, the atmospherics and any potential threats. I then waited at the FRV which I had designated, this was a communications tower passed the town of Zauara and just short of the border, this FRV was established so you could pack your weapons away and have a final toilet break before proceeding to the border.
I remember waiting some time and concerned you were slow, when you finally arrived it became clear that one of the vehicles in your 6-vehicle convoy had an RTA with a local civilian. We both know who was at fault with that RTA and again not the platform to discuss.

Yes I wasn’t at that RTA however when we arrived at the border, the driver involved had pursued the convoy and was causing a situation that was bringing unwanted attention to the convoy and so I then got involved. As I collected all your passports whilst you all remained locked in your armoured vehicles, my local fixer was still having to calm down the situation with the civilian driver and buy us time to get you across before it attracted any unwanted 3rd party attention.

When we finally got through the border, you were met by the Canadian Embassy based in Tunis and all obviously relieved that the mission was a success. Your convoy was escorted by blue light onwards to Tunis, myself in the soft skin was pushed out of that convoy and followed on later. On arriving in Tunis I continued to work to liaise with the fish wagons and ensure your equipment arrived safely.

The following day you all flew home to Canada and myself went back into Libya. I charged only $7000 to pay the drivers of my vehicle, my fixer and the fish wagon drivers comfortably.

This operation to me is much more important than being recognised with honors or awards, knowing 22 personnel got home safely to their families is what’s important.

Yes you and your CPO team protected your clients in the armoured vehicles on the road move from Tripoli to Tunis and that isn’t being questioned. What you didn’t see or clearly understand from the walls of palm city or your armoured vehicle was myself providing forward surveillance, intelligence and a security bubble around you from the moment I was contracted to the day you crossed the border.

As a private security operator, this was a role that was carried out and executed single handedly.

I shouldn’t have to explain myself, especially on these means but if you question my integrity then I provide facts and details.

To hear someone say that they single handedly evacuated the Canadian Embassy and its personnel is very disheartening.
My name is Steve Cruickshanks and I was a Close Protection Operator (CPO) deployed on that mission and here are the facts:
Mr Scott did play a role in this evacuation no doubt about it. He definitely completed the advance work to meet with local leaders between Tripoli and the Tunisian border in order to give the Canadian contingent the best possible chance of safe passage. As far as the actual mission to evacuate the Canadian diplomats is concerned… that mission was completed by the team of CPO’s on the ground that had been protecting the diplomats and the embassy for the 5 months leading up to the shutter of the embassy. Members of the CP team participated in the recce phase of the operation, completed the entirety of the mission orders and briefing, and conducted the actual mission which included the Close Personal Protection of the Canadian Diplomats. In the days leading up to the evacuation, my team members escorted our diplomats to our embassy in order to remove sensitive property and physically secure the embassy prior to our evacuation. During the intense militia fighting that sent stray rounds through our compound my team “hard pointed” our diplomats and provided round the clock body guard coverage. Finally, on the morning that we departed Tripoli enroute to Tunis, Mr. Scott left earlier than the motorcade to advance the route to the border. He had with him the “fish trucks” he described that were full with our members personal luggage. The diplomats and sensitive items were protected and escorted the Close Protection team from Tripoli to the Canadian Embassy in Tunis. We did have drone coverage and were involved in a vehicle accident prior to reaching the border but I can swear to the fact that Mr. Scott was not there. Mr. Scott in my opinion did an outstanding job with his part of the mission but he did not in any way/shape/or form single handedly evacuate the Canadian Mission in Tripoli in 2014. After returning to Canada not a single member of the CP Team received recognition or awards for this mission which is another sad truth.

All of the above is absolute truth, I was there.

I’ve listened to this podcast 3 times…..it is gut wrenching in so many ways….. not only in the way the Marine Corp manual mischaracterized the tough little sergeant that survived the battle……he was used as a bad example of how an NCO acted during a major battle……unbelievable. He was set up by his leadership and did the best he could to survive. I felt terrible for the his captain that didn’t want to separate the company but was given a direct order by his superior to do so…..he did his best to get back to the guys that were left behind to be ambushed…..It broke my heart to hear that he ended up becoming an alcoholic and committing suicide……I was deeply touched by the poem that Jocko read that was written by the dead journalists wife ……And finally I was totally impressed by EC, Jocko and Dave as they held together at the end of this gut wrenching story to be there for each other each other and to end the podcast in a positive matter.

Hey Jocko, didn’t realize it but I guess we had served in Afghanistan at the same time in 06, pretty neat i was 10th MTN 5-25FA. Anyways I am a cop now ended up being diagnosed with severe ptsd caused by an accumulation of events throughout my career of 9 years on patrol. Nothing special just a beat cop but got into a lot of sh*t. Anyways I listened to your talk with Rogan bout 7 months ago, super inspiring and you hit the nail on the head, you’re on point with everything that came out of your mouth, the whole world needs to hear that. In one podcast Dave talking that he first drop EJM missile. But I saw that B-52 in the Iraq it was the longest mission they fly over 34,5 hours to destroy enemy radars, that made for fighter pilots come in and complete the mission. The mission name was “secret squirrel”.

This Yeonmi was on the Mikhaila Peterson Podcast, where they talked about her life and experiences in the rise of communism in North Korea. I have excerpted below (from the Amazon excerpt) to show you how the communists clearly implemented a newspeak like language change to control the population. It was not only mind control techniques from 1984. In North Korea, any citizen committing a ‘thought crime’ is arrested, but in a ‘brave new world’ like eugenics (the opposite of Nazi eugenics), they not only took take you, but your family, sometimes to 10 generations. You could be arrested and executed because a distant cousin committed a thought crime.

“The country I grew up in was not like the one my parents had known as children in the 1960s and 1970s. When they were young, the state took care of everyone’s basic needs: clothes, medical care, food. After the Cold War ended, the Communist countries that had been propping up the North Korean regime all but abandoned it, and our state-controlled economy collapsed. North Koreans were suddenly on their own.

I was too young to realize how desperate things were becoming in the grown-up world, as my family tried to adapt to the massive changes in North Korea during the 1990s. After my sister and I were asleep, my parents would sometimes lie awake, sick with worry, wondering what they could do to keep us all from starving to death.

Anything I did overhear, I learned quickly not to repeat. I was taught never to express my opinion, never to question anything. I was taught to simply follow what the government told me to do or say or think. I actually believed that our Dear Leader, Kim Jong Il, could read my mind, and I would be punished for my bad thoughts. And if he didn’t hear me, spies were everywhere, listening at the windows and watching in the school yard. We all belonged to inminban, or neighborhood “people’s units,” and we were ordered to inform on anyone who said the wrong thing. We lived in fear, and almost everyone—my mother included—had a personal experience that demonstrated the dangers of talking.”

In North Korea, they no longer have the words to express for love or friend, only comrade. You should talk to Yeonmi Park, or read her book “In order to live” about like escape to the US, and her real life ‘brave new world’ of having to learn these concepts as a teenager.

Coming in fired up after listening to this on a run, so this might be a little long.

Back in the day, I used to pick and choose among Jocko Podcasts, but I never second guess any more, they’re all awesome. Steve must be a fantastic addition to EF. On the ad portion I’m definitely 80%+ and this one isn’t to be missed. Echo’s transition and interplay with Jocko in the transition from gis to jeans was perfect. I am standing by to get some. I was heard LOLing after “Guess what? This podcast we’re listening to, it’s a podcast.” Lastly, a shout out to my wife, she got us the Field Manual Expanded Edish as a New Year’s present It’s definitely helping us with that path. No matter how GOOD you thought it would be, its better.

My dad (b. 1918) was one of the fellows who was tasked with repairing helicopters during Vietnam and Korea, I believe it was contracted with Bell. His stories was that it was so sad that he would come across body parts … his and this generation is what i grew up with. They know how to shrug it off… my heroes; sincerely each and every one. I ended up with my own icu experience and i had that growing up example to follow. Thank god.

This one hit close to home, my dad was drafted into the Australian Army by virtue of a lottery draw – if it matched your birthdate, you were called up to the military. There were a few checks and balances but overall this is how it worked in 1968 in Australia. So my dad was in 8RAR, he got given a choice between a tour of duty in the Vietnam jungle for 1 year, or 2 years in Malaya – rear echelon. He took the latter option. He took a two year tour in Malaya and was allowed to take his wife (my mother) there.

Every American should listen to this one! Especially at the end when ‘Cowboy’ talks about the current state of the US elections. He is spot on, we all need to be vigilant and not take our freedoms for granted. I remember listening to a speech from two Pearl Harbor survivors in 1997, at the end one of those men talked about being ready and never letting our guard down that we could have another Pearl Harbor at any time. I didn’t give it to much thought until 9-11, and that man and his speech was the first thing that I thought about when I saw that attack.

You have GOT to get a new website or find a new template. My name is Emily, I am a warrior mom of a warrior kid who is 6 years old. My son and I have worked our way through the warrior kids books and really enjoy them, they are a great motivation tool. With this new Covid-adventure, we decided to do homeschooling with our son, because he did not do well with distance learning. I get up early, and work out, prepare for my day, and then try to wake up my son to do a small workout, and school work before I leave for work. I do this because I am afraid of him getting behind. He and his dad do a no schooling method, where they do not have structure but they learn about lots of different things, really what ever they are interested in. My husband has asked me to not wake my son up, because he thinks I will burn him out early. I do get kick back from my son when he wakes up, but once he is up we always have a good time. Do you think that pushing young kids early will discourage them from wanting to be the best they can be?

This has to be one of the funniest ad read sections in memory. Love Dave’s attempt at throwing Echo a line to pull him to shore and then seeing it totally rebuffed.

Finished listening to Podcast #255 on this mornings commute. Have to throw some love towards Echo Charles, I enjoy his “Certifiable Sermons” and the way Jocko busts EC’s horns during the sermons.

Hi Sir, where can I get this book I have looked almost every where!

My eyes lit up when I saw About Face a link to this podcast. I was an SF operator in the South African military, involved in the Angolan conflict in the 80’s and 90’s. I devoured this book (About face) when it came out , and read all his later books. I even have a copy of his Vietnam Primer. I 100% echo the sentiments in this podcast. I can take it a step further, following Col Hackworth’s approach as a critical thinker, I was able to step out of the ideology we had been indoctrinated with as soldiers for the Apartheid regime. If someone of Col Hackworth ‘s experience could be this reflective of his own leaders and institutions, then so should I.

I completely changed tack in my career and am now involved in software engineering and technology, but the leadership principles in this book still apply. I will be listening to podcast #2 next and then the podcasts.

I understand why Col Hackworth is not followed by the conventional thinkers because of his challenges to the status quo, Im am really glad that you are highlighting his thinking.
