And now for something (completely) different:After almost 25 wonderful years with Freshfields, including the amazing last five years in our Tokyo office, I have returned to Germany and retired from Freshfields. The Freshfields Tokyo office has grown significantly over the last years, and I leave the firm knowing that my fellow partners, in Tokyo and internationally, will continue to take Freshfields from strength to strength. It’s a fantastic firm, and I will always remain a Freshfields man and fan. In case you wonder what is up for me next: I am building a portfolio of activities leveraging the experiences and skillsets I have developed over the years at Freshfields but also exploring new pastures. These activities will include consultancy on transactions, investments and post-merger integration on a project basis as well as coaching and mentoring lawyers. The new endeavours I am exploring include taking the record store „Michelle Records“ I co-own in Hamburg, Germany, to the next level.Looking forward to new adventures and to staying in touch.Jochen

US are us. Really excited to have Noah Carr and Gordon Palmquist join us. They are outstanding lawyers and wonderful people. No, I don’t feel intimidated being a European among three US partners and three bengoshi partners. I am rather encouraged by our new members sharing my haircut (or lack of it) and/or beard design.

We are a relatively compact team here in our Tokyo office, but the wonderful spirit within the team and complete alignment on what we want to achieve, and how we do that, seems to get broad recognition in the market, as evidenced by us being Finalists for eight ALB Japan Law Awards, including International Deal Firm of the Year; Antitrust and Competition Law Firm of the Year; International Deal Firm of the Year; M&A Deal of the Year (Premium); M&A Deal of the Year (Midsize); Woman Lawyer of the Year (Law Firm): Tomoko Nakajima; Dispute Resolution Partner of the Year: Joaquin (Jack) Terceño; Managing Partner of the Year: Takeshi Nakao; and Fastest Balding Partner of the Year: Jochen Ellrott. I may have misread the info on the last category though.

I love shinnenkais, the new year receptions hosted by companies and organisations in Japan. For close to three years, COVID kept me from enjoying these special events. Last Thursday, we hosted our first shinnenkai since 2020 in the Four Seasons Hotel Otemachi. What a joy to chat and touch glasses with more than 140 of our clients and various Freshfields partners from other offices around the world. The photo shows that our team was in high spirits, yet somewhat tired, at the end of a wonderful evening.
