What is the difference between a CW radar and a pulse radar? ›

At the conceptual level, these two types of radars are very similar. The primary conceptual difference is that a pulse radar has a relatively high bandwidth receiver while a gated CW system has a relatively narrow bandwidth receiver.

The NEXRAD Service Life Extension

Pulsed signals remain powered for short periods of time, working with and without some form of modulation, such as amplitude, frequency, or phase modulation. CW signals remain on constantly and may be modulated to function as radars or in communications systems.

One of the main differences between CW lasers and pulsed lasers is their power output. Pulsed lasers can produce high peak power, while their average power is relatively low. By comparison, CW lasers produce continuous power. Because of these different power outputs, lasers have many diverse uses.

Continuous wave modulation, such as AM, FM, and PM, alters the characteristics of a continuous carrier wave. In contrast, pulse modulation, such as PAM, PWM, and PPM, discretizes the analog signal into pulses.

Thus, pulsed-wave Doppler has signal aliasing at high frequencies but has depth acuity, whereas continuous-wave Doppler has no signal aliasing but does have depth ambiguity.
