I’m diving into a review of the Manscaped Performance Package 4.0, courtesy of Manscaped themselves.

As a martial artist, especially in grappling sports like Jiu-Jitsu or wrestling, managing body hair is more than a matter of appearance – it’s a practical and hygienic necessity.

Unboxing & first impressions

Let’s take a look at the contents of the Performance Package 4.0:

Lawn Mower 4.0

The Lawn Mower 4.0 is the central piece in the Manscaped Performance Package 4.0. Its sleek design and fame from collaborations with the likes of Derrick Lewis made me excited to try it.

On first use, though, I learned a valuable lesson about the tool’s power. Being overly aggressive and using it without a guard led to a minor skin cut.

But it highlights a key consideration rather than an immediate flaw, trimming close to the skin with any device is going to have some risks. I’d recommend others to be cautious and take it slow.

The device has what they call “SkinSafe™ Technology” but with a disclaimer that it can’t guarantee cut protection. I don’t think any device could be on such different surfaces to deal with, so keep that in mind.

Despite this initial hiccup, Lawn Mower 4.0’s performance is really good in sensitive areas if you’re being careful.

While it doesn’t provide the closest shave I’ve experienced in a body trimmer, this isn’t necessarily a drawback. A less close shave can be preferable, depending on your skin’s sensitivity—a closest shave can create a lot of itchiness.

What truly sets this trimmer apart is its LED light. This feature is surprisingly useful, lighting up hard-to-see hairs in awkward grooming positions.

Combined with the battery life indicator and long battery life, which signals when a recharge is needed, the wireless Lawn Mower 4.0 is very practical.

I’ve been happy using the Lawn Mower 4.0 as my new body hair trimmer for the last few months, using it down below and on my shoulders and back to remove unwanted hair.

It helps me to keep my body cooler and feel more fresh and clean for longer, which helps me be more comfortable in sweaty training sessions and recovery time.

For martial artists, I’d recommend this tool alone to help reduce getting your chest or wrist hairs pulled at constantly in grappling.

Weed Whacker 2.0

Moving on to the Weed Whacker 2.0, this device is Manscaped’s answer to the often-overlooked but crucial task of nose and ear hair trimming.

My experience with the Weed Whacker has been mostly positive for this purpose, enhancing my overall neat grooming and appearance. It doesn’t help with my training, but I look a lot better!

I noticed, though, that achieving a thorough trim requires moving the device at various angles to catch all the hair. It’s a bit more time-consuming than I expected having not used a device like this before, but it gets the job 80-90% done.

This nose-trimming device is wireless just like its body-trimming counterpart, where both can be charged up in the same docking station and battery-life indicator light.

Unlike the Lawn Mower 4.0, the Weed Whacker 2.0 doesn’t have a forward LED light to help with the grooming, although it’s largely not necessary since you can’t see what you’re working on anyway.

Crop Preserver & Crop Reviver

The Performance Package 4.0 also includes the Crop Preserver and Crop Reviver, two unique tonics designed for below-the-belt care.

The Crop Preserver is to help as an anti-chafing deodorant for your bits. You apply it after showing to get the benefits of odor protection.

And the Crop Reviver is to help as a ball toning spray, offering a quick refresh with Aloe Vera when you need a quick touch-up.

For martial artists engaged in intensive training, there’s a ton of importance on hygiene and comfort in these sensitive areas to deal with chafing and the potential infections in warm, damp, areas.

These tonics deliver on their promise of freshness and reduced friction, but their suitability comes down to personal preference considering the ingredients and your individual skin sensitivity.

The Crop Preserver and Crop Reviver both include a form of alcohol and fragrance that doesn’t align with my preferences for all-natural products for the skin and hair.

Don’t get me wrong, the fragrance smells amazing and like a strong manly musk but it isn’t something I feel comfortable using around my manhood.

Magic Mats

An often-overlooked aspect of grooming is the cleanup but Manscaped’s Magic Mats come in to save the day and make the entire job much easier.

These disposable shaving mats in a ball-grooming newspaper design are a simple creative addition to the Performance Package 4.0.

I found this subtle extra to be a necessary add-on, you simply unfold out the newspaper onto the floor to create a large surface area to work with. Place a full-length mirror opposite while standing bare and get to work.

The stray hairs that fall will land in the newspaper, and allow you to easily scrunch it up afterward to throw in the trash. It also collects the hairs so that you can slide them into the trash and put the newspaper into recycling instead.

On the Magic Mats you’ll find instructional material and jokes that add a bit of a more positive spin on a tedious task, which aligns with what I expected from Manscaped—making something rarely talked about publicly into something fun.

The Shed Travel Bag

The inclusion of The Shed travel bag in the Manscaped Performance Package 4.0 is a welcome and generous extra.

It’s a high-quality, leather-like toiletry travel bag that looks luxurious and durable.

I also found it to have a massive space inside, comfortably fitting the Lawn Mower, Weed Whacker, and accessories with plenty of room to spare for more personal toiletries.

There are also a few inner pockets to sort out the smaller items, like your Lawn Mower guards and cleaning brush.

This feels like a massive benefit for martial artists who often need more toiletry bag space for things like grappling soaps and salves to resist bacteria growth on their body, bandaids, and tape for covering skin cuts, beard balms, wrist/ankle wrappings, and more.

Overall I think The Shed travel bag extra is an excellent addition to the package with top-quality materials and it really comes in handy for organizing all your grooming gear.

Manscaped Boxer Brief

What’s also included is the Manscaped Boxers which are said to be anti-chafing.

In my experience of wearing them for a while, they do exactly that.

The material is incredibly soft and form-fitting, providing a level of comfort for daily wear but also a more rigorous activity like within martial arts training.

They’re hugging the skin but not in a way that feels too tightly at any time. Other briefs I wear can be too tight at the hem around the thigh, but no such issue here.

I can barely feel them while wearing them except for the noticeable softness against my skin, and there’s no annoying waistband tag that is scratching or itching my lower back that I often find with other ‘premium’ boxers.

Final thoughts on the Performance Package 4.0

Overall, I’ve been very satisfied with the Manscaped Performance Package 4.0.

It’s a bundle of grooming essentials that’s been thoughtfully put together to be useful for regular men but has plenty of helpful use cases for martial artists as well.

In the entire package, you’re getting:

I think that’s a lot in one box for the asking price where just a body trimmer alone can be in the $60-120 range.

So, would I recommend it? Absolutely. If you’re buying for a loved one then it’s undoubtedly an excellent gift for the holidays.
