NE - Having problems with internet activity

I have service in Omaha,NE. I'm CONSTANTLY having data being transfered to my PC. The 'data' light on my modem (toshiba pcx100u) is CONSTANTLY blinking all day long. To verify it wasnt my computer i hooked up a 2nd computer(that i normally leave off the internet) and used it as my router (put 2 nics in it, one for external one for internal) anyway, my internal traffic is minimal(only when i access the net) but my external is still crazy more than 200mb a day without using any internet at all. cox says its normal but i've had cox HSI before at different location and did NOT have this activity...can anyone help??

that is normal ARP traffic. There is nothing wrong. Do you run a firewall or a nat? If not try the free version of Zone alarm at »www.zonelabs.com and it has a traffic monitor to show when data is being sent and received on your system

im running winxp PRO network sharing, i suppose its a nat. i have du meter running. and i think its weird that when a computer is 'inside' the network doesnt really have any traffic, but the one connected directly to modem has like ~200mb/day of nothing, i mean i get close to the limits as it is w/o my cable modem doing whatever CONSTANTLY, i mean the 'data' light is on off on off not even a second delay between, and its doing this ALL day

do you have a fire wall on the computer that runs off the modem? Do you have a router? If you are not running a fire wall that may be why you are seeing all that traffic. The activity light will flash no matter what you do, as that is the arp traffic, but that will not show up on your d/l meter. You should have an active monitor to see what is using your system. Now do remember that du meter will show all traffic, not just the modem. Any files that you share between systems will show traffic in du meter.

200MB of arp traffic is way high. Open a command prompt and type netstat -a
This will show all connections in use.(make sure your machine has not been compromised) I live near the center mall if I can be of any help to you. Just let me know. NE - Having problems with internet activity - Cox (7)

And I'm just a few blocks away from Untroubled1! That does seem high but I get the same thing, without the amount of data...

I run a seti server for BBR Team Starfire though, so my stats are way different...

Let us know, do anything we can to help!!

I have the same problem across the river, never been able to solve it.

One thing that is strange is I see a TON of INBOUND port 53 traffic even thou I do not have a DNS server!

I have several friends accross the "Muddy Mo" and none of them get the speed we get in Omaha. I have no port 53 traffic in my logs. Out of curiosity I just checked logs on my wife's machine. Even with her surfing today it only shows 90MB d/l for the day.
