Which weather radar is the most accurate? ›

The WSR-88D is one of the most powerful and advanced Weather Surveillance Doppler Radar in the world. Since first being built and tested in 1988, it has been installed and used operationally at over 160 locations across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Basic Radar Information:

Clear- air mode is used when there is no rainfall or there is a freezing precipitation event. Precipitation mode is used when there is rainfall. The radar senses energy from the radar beam that is reflected back to the radar by various targets in the atmosphere.

The radar's computers measure the phase change of the reflected pulse of energy which then convert that change to a velocity of the object, either toward or from the radar. Information on the movement of objects either toward or away from the radar can be used to estimate the speed of the wind.

Radars measure the velocity of objects in the atmosphere relative to the radar site. Rotation can be detected when there is a couplet of winds moving toward and away from the radar located right next to each other. This often appears as a red area directly next to a green area as seen on the NWS image below.

This is an absolute essential when it comes to storm chasing. It can't just be any weather radar; it must be a highly reflective Doppler radar. This will give you accurate and timely data for your location.

In dry ESPs, the collector plates are cleaned by applying mechanical impulses or vibration to the plates, which knocks loose the collected particulate matter (referred to as rapping). In wet ESPs, the collector plates are cleaned by rinsing with water.

Precipitation Mode

The standard, or default, operational mode of the WSR-88D. The radar automatically switches into precipitation mode from clear-air mode if the measured reflectivity exceeds a specific threshold value. The precipitation mode of NEXRAD is more sensitive than previous weather radars.

Back when we learned to fly, we were taught the one-in-60 rule. If you were 60nm from a VOR and 1-degree off track you were 1nm off track. For radar there is a more useful form of the rule. If you want to know how many feet 1-degree is at any range just add two zeros to the range.

dBZ. Nondimensional "unit" of radar reflectivity which represents a logarithmic power ratio (in decibels, or dB) with respect to radar reflectivity factor, Z. The value of Z is a function of the amount of radar beam energy that is backscattered by a target and detected as a signal (or echo).

Decibel relative to Z, or dBZ, is a logarithmic dimensionless technical unit used in radar, mostly in weather radar, to compare the equivalent reflectivity factor (Z) of a remote object (in mm⁶ per m³) to the return of a droplet of rain with a diameter of 1 mm (1 mm⁶ per m³).

The wall cloud is your best identifier that a tornado is possible. This cloud is a compact, lowering of the cloud, where the updraft and inflow of a storm are located. There is a lot of movement here and when they are rotating wall clouds, funnel clouds and tornadoes can descend from them.
