Today is World Radiology Day so we thought this would be a great opportunity to interview one of our radiologists Jay Joshi. Jay has been with us at Saxon Clinic for nearly 4 years.🎤 Jay - What made you want to be a Radiologist?🩻 My interest in radiology was stoked during my junior doctor years as I quickly learned how integral diagnostics and imaging is to almost every patient journey. Sometimes, a patient will need a scan to aid in diagnosis or investigate their symptoms. I found radiology especially appealing as it incorporates every branch of medicine and therefore requires a wide range of knowledge to interpret the scans and formulate an accurate report. It also allows further specialisation into a particular area of interest and procedural work which is very important to me. I enjoy new challenges, patient interaction and performing minimally invasive, image-guided procedures that can significantly help my patients. Radiology incorporates all of these.🎤 Describe to me a typical day?🩻 Two words - extremely busy! Each day is slightly varied and brings its own challenges but on the whole, I will certainly have some time allocated for reporting both outpatient and emergency/inpatient CT and MRI scans. I also perform ultrasound scans that are either diagnostic or combined with performing a procedure such as an ultrasound-guided steroid injection into a joint. There may also be a specialist multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting scheduled for which I would have prepared to discuss complex or challenging patients and help guide my consultant colleagues in other specialities. There will certainly be urgent scans and procedures that need my attention so give a patient the best outcome. Communication in radiology is vital so there always has to be time to respond to email queries from colleagues and radiographers.🎤 For the benefit of the general public, what does being a radiologist involve and what procedures do you get involved with and why?🩻 All radiologists are doctors who have attended medical school. After the initial junior doctor/foundation years and attaining a training post, they undergo at least 5 years of training which incorporates general and subspecialty radiology. It also requires numerous exams to be passed which are regarded as some of the most difficult in medicine. In terms of procedural work, I perform both ultrasound and CT-guided injections of steroids for conditions such as arthritis, spinal nerve impingement, rheumatological conditions and sports injuries. I am also proficient in performing image-guided soft tissue and bone biopsies when there is clinical doubt of the diagnosis and an answer is required to influence management.Thank you for all of the hard work you do Jay and all of the radiology team and Happy World Radiologist Day!

💡 Inspiring story about how #teleassistance in radiology became the solution to a shortage of specialists of #radiology technicians to see patients in need. By eliminating the need to bring the patient to #technology – they instead brought technology to the patient.👏🏽https://lnkd.in/eJ3aZCag

Lisa, Clinical Manager Radiology, and Sasha, Charge MRI Medical Imaging Technologist, stand outside the door to the MRI machine at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Whanganui. The MRI machine behind this door (we can't enter with a phone) has been in use for 20 years, scanning an average of 200 people per month, which adds up to a whooping 48,000 scans - is on the road to retirement - and it deserves it!Renovations for that to happen, are well underway and on track to go live in September of this year. We're excited to be replacing our current workhorse with a state of the art, Tesla MRI scan 1.5. This new machine offers a marked improvement in diagnostic quality (how clear the pictures are), allowing our radiologists to see much more detail in the images, and in some cases, the advances in technology will even allow for a faster scan.Lisa, Clinical Manager Radiology, has worked here for over 17 years and is impressed with the size of the new scanner. "Our patients won’t be as claustrophobic inside this scanner which will make a huge difference to their experience. The tech' has improved dramatically since our old machine was installed, so our radiographers will see significant changes in how long it takes to scan some of our patients, plus they'll be working with clearer images enabling a more accurate diagnosis."For those wondering exactly how much of a difference will the new machine offer, Sasha, Charge MRI Medical Imaging Technologist, said, 'It will be like looking at an old tv then upgrading to a 4K, high-definition, plasma screen, you’ll notice some changes!"Sasha, has spent 11 years working with our current MRI machine. "We deal with quite unwell and nervous patients, empathy and patience are a must for our Radiology team. The whole experience for any patient needs to be positive, to ensure that best quality results are achieved - every time. Having this bigger machine will help, in particular our larger patients, feel less restricted which can help reduce those anxious feelings associated with an MRI."As renovations continue we'll update on their progress. For now, the space for the new machine - which will be coming in through the roof, is being prepared. Most important to note, our community won't be without an MRI scanner at any stage because the new machine will be up and running long before our 'old faithful' officially retires.#OurPeopleOurPlace #HealthNZWhanganui #Whanganui #WhanganuiHospital
