Retro Swarm Challenge (3)

The Retro Swarm Challenge is Bee Swarm Simulator's custom experience for Roblox's 2024 "The Classic" Event. It was first released on May 23rd, 2024 and hosted a total of 6 collectable Tix and 5 collectable Tokens until May 28th, 2024.

The Retro Swarm Challenge is a permanent addition that will be refined over time.

During the event, fifteen user-created experiences, including Bee Swarm Simulator, were selected to create a custom experience where players could earn special event badges to redeem unlockable prizes. Players had the opportunity to earn 10 badges for Tix and 5 badges for Tokens in each experience.

Event Lobby[]

Upon entering the portal, the player is teleported to a separate experience: "Retro Swarm Challenge ⚔️ [DEFENSE THE HIVES!!!!] v1.2(fixed)". Players spawn on a classic-styled island surrounded by smaller islands that contain multiple historic models. The main island had five entry cubes, a billboard containing information on how to play the minigame, and a Portal leading back to Bee Swarm Simulator.

When entering a cube, a twenty-five-second countdown will begin. Each cube has a maximum capacity of four players. As soon as a cube is full, the timer will rapidly decrease. Once the timer reaches zero, players will be teleported to the minigame.

During "The Classic", three Tix could have been found by entering the square teleporters scattered around the lobby.

Gameplay[]

Retro Swarm Challenge (9)

The challenge takes place in a long, rectangular box. Players spawn in front of four claimable hives at the beginning of the map. The map contains four different fields (Mixed, Blue, Red, and White), a Shop on the left, and a large cave at the end. Two additional Tix could have been found within the challenge's map.

Below the Honey and Pollen bar, players can view their Bricks, the current round, the time remaining in the round, and the HP of the hives. On the right side of the screen, there is a server leaderboard showing each player's Brick, Honey, and Damage totals. Players begin with fifty Bricks, and the hives begin with ten HP.

The objective of the Retro Swarm Challenge is to survive as many rounds as possible while defending the hives from monsters. In order to fight the monsters, players must unlock bees or buy weapons at the Shop to defeat them. Killing enemies drops Brick Tokens, which allow players to purchase more items.

Players keep their gear and bees from the main game, giving them a notable advantage if they have made significant progress. Players without bees have the option to rent and level up bees for Bricks.

When the HP of the hives reach zero, the challenge ends and players are rewarded based on their final scores.

Enemies[]

There are two types of enemies during the event: Slimes and Zombies. Enemies gradually level up. Like mobs, if a player's bee is a lower level than the enemy, their accuracy decreases by 50% per level.

Slimes move slowly in a straight line towards the hives, destroying flowers as they move through the fields, similarly to a Cogmower. As they increase in level, they grow larger, increasing their hitbox and health.

Zombies also move towards the hives. Unlike Slimes, however, if a Zombie spots a nearby player, they target them instead. Zombies are not fast enough to catch up to the player. Critical hits are more effective against zombies.

Bricks[]

Bricks are the Retro Swarm Challenge's main currency. They can be obtained by killing enemies, through Leaves on the fields, or by destroying Brick Blooms. All Bricks are collected through Brick Tokens.

Brick Blooms are retro-styled flowers that can spawn on any of the four fields. Their behavior is very similar to Puffshrooms. After a certain amount of pollen is collected in their radius, Brick Blooms burst into Brick Tokens. The tokens that spawn from Brick Blooms are both local and global, so players always receive tokens from them regardless of whether they helped to destroy it or not. When a Brick Bloom is defeated, another one will spawn in a random field, one level higher. In higher waves, multiple Brick Blooms may be active at the same time.

At the Shop, Bricks are used for unlocking, renting, and levelling up Bees, as well as purchasing weapons and boosts. Furthermore, players have the option to convert their Honey into ten Bricks at a time at an exponentially increasing price.

There is a hidden shop located to the left of the cave that allows for Honey to be converted into 100 Bricks at once.

Shop[]

Players are able to purchase items and unlock or upgrade Bees for Bricks at the Shop.

Trivia[]

  • The Retro Swarm Challenge has many references to classic Roblox content:
  • The enemies in the Retro Swarm Challenge are consistently referred to as "monsters" instead of mobs.
  • Aphids can still spawn during the Retro Swarm Challenge, albeit rarely.
  • Some consumables, such as Purple Potions, Stingers, Glitter and Cloud Vials can be used during the event. Others, such as Field Dice or Balloons, are prohibited.
  • Players cannot edit their hive during the challenge, but they can convert pollen to honey.
  • Codes can be used to obtain buffs during the challenge. Buffs that are obtained before entering will remain active.
  • Any pollen remaining in the player's bag after losing the challenge will carry over to the main game.
  • When a gifted Digital Bee's Map Corruption ability activates, the server-wide announcement message will still be displayed even though the affected field is inaccessible.
