What tribe owns Tulsa? ›

Most of modern Tulsa is located in the Muscogee Nation, with parts located in the Cherokee Nation and Osage Nation.

The Chickasaw are the richest and most politically connected of the Five tribes, whose numbers include the Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole, and Muscogee Creek. All came to Oklahoma in the early 19th Century after being forcibly removed from the Southeast to make room for white expansion.

The city of Tulsa's roots date back to 1836 when Archee Yahola, chief of the Creek Nation, picked a site underneath a large oak tree near the banks of the Arkansas River for councils and meetings. Two Creek words, Tallassee (Old Town) and Lochapokas (Place of Turtles), were used to name the settlement.

Following World War I, Tulsa was recognized nationally for its affluent African American community known as the Greenwood District. This thriving business district and surrounding residential area was referred to as “Black Wall Street.” In June 1921, a series of events nearly destroyed the entire Greenwood area.

Making Tulsa Famous

Glenpool has been known as “The Town that made Tulsa Famous” because of the 1905 discovery of oil on the land of Ida E. Glenn. The resulting oil boom at the Glenn Pool made Tulsa the “Oil Capital of the World.”

For most of the 20th century, the city held the nickname "Oil Capital of the World" and played a major role as one of the most important hubs for the American oil industry.

In 2016, Hip Hop artist Danny Boy O'Connor purchased the “Curtis Brothers House.” A longtime fan of the novel and the movie, O'Connor had visited the site during earlier Tulsa tour stops, and just couldn't shake the belief that the house needed to be preserved for future generations.
