Price of Glory is the latest to step into the ring and face an inFilm uation. creasingly no-win sitReview It might be argued that successful boxing pictures are only about boxing in the most peripheral sense, and Norman Jewison's The Hurricane certainly makes a case for that viewpoint. Price of Glory is a sincere drama that gives some deserved screen time to the troubles and aspirations of a struggling Mexican American family.
But this is a movie that replaces stereotypes with archetypes. Saddled with the thankless role of the obsessed patriarch is Jimmy Smits. His Arturo Ortega is a washed-up boxer who quit after being exploited by sleazy promoters and taking a fearful drubbing in his final fight. As his three sons grow up, he hectors and cajoles them into striving to become the champion he never was. Jimmy is the bad apple, Sonny the one who wants to break away and start his own family, and Johnny is the pure boxer with the stamp of a champion. Few punches are telegraphed with more obviousness than the tragedy that befalls the Ortegas in Phil Berger's screenplay. Berger is a sportswriter, and he may shun cliches in his day job but he embraces them wholeheartedly in Price of Glory.
